I Am, By Far, One of The "Lucky Ones"!

So I have to say that I truly am "One of The Lucky Ones". Many of you know that I have this totally awesome cousin...who also happens to be my BEST FRIEND. She is the amazing and awesome Laura...I am so lucky to have her in my life. I wake up each morning and am very thankful that I get to see her each day.

Laura does many things for me and has been a rock in my life. She keeps me grounded, but also lets me soar. I love how she compliments my personality and brings balance to my life. I know that I would not be alive today if it weren't for her in my life. My family is amazing and crazy at times, but that is family. We all go through it together. I am so lucky to have family members who I also consider to be my best and closest friends.

I want to tell Laura a GIANT "thank you" for being who she is, and for letting me be in her life. Did I mention how lucky I am? Because I totally am!

Laura---You are the greatest and I hope we never lose our bond. I love you!

A Walk Down Memory Lane

I know, it's crazy. You are thinking "She actually did a real blog!" It's true folks, I am doing a real blog. You can start breathing again...please, I insist...(it's vital to continuing to read my blog)!

So now that your breathing and heart-rate are back to normal, here is my blog. Recently one of my dreams has come true. I got a book. It's not just a normal, oh this looks like a fun read, I think I will get it, book. It, folks, is something that has always held a special place in my heart book, that I have been hunting down forever. Okay, not forever, but for a very long time. (I bet you are thinking to yourself..."self, tell me the title of the book already!") Well I will do one better...here is the cover, so you can see it in all it's glory and wonder a bit why I think it it is so awesome!
This is "Alas, Babylon" by Pat Frank.
This book came into my life in high school, in my literature class. This is the cover I remember from school. I read this book in 11th grade, and has always been a favorite of mine. You can ask Laura, every now and again I would go crazy looking for it at Libraries, on the Internet, and book stores. For some reason it was always "checked out", or they had to order it, and we all know with my welfare status, I certainly could never afford it.
So finally after 13 years of yearning, I OWN a copy. I received it just a few days ago, and with the new cover, it was the perfect scene to bring all the memories of what the book holds. It is perfect.
You may be asking yourselves, "Why is this book so great?" Well let me tell you. There are many reasons why I love this book so much.

1) How the human spirit can survive and adapt.
"You can survive if you are ready and willing to adapt."- Wikipedia
2) Hope and inspiration from our fellow men and women in times of need.
3) The "...Real picture of human beings numbed by catastrophe but still driven by the unconquerable determination of living creatures to keep n being alive"-The New Yorker
4) "...a sense of privilege. Only the very fortunate get to struggle. Only the living may improve. Whatever events had us feeling especially low, we might look to dark imaginings...and tell ourselves--it could be a lot worse."-David Brin.

All of these people sum it up more eloquently than I could ever do. I also love how in detail the author gets in describing essential needs food, water, gas, medicines, and everyday necessities that we take for granted. Things that we don't think about or don't really appreciate until they are gone, or about to be taken from us.

It makes me think of our leaders in the church, who, for as long as I can remember, have always encouraged us to have an adequate food supply and necessities on hand...to stock up throughout the years and to update them in case of some type of catastrophe. Whether it be caused by nature or human. We should all be prepared and continue preparing.

So there you go folks...that is why I love the book "Alas, Babylon". I know that this isn't the most entertaining blog ever...but hopefully it will get people thinking and hoping that when and if something horrible happens, we can band together as families, friends, communities and humans and survive.

Update....

Someday I am going to get around to taking more time and doing a real blog and update on my life. I am sort of finally getting into a normal routine and having fun. I am actually having lots of fun. Many people can read both of my cousins blogs and see what all about the fun we have. Laura and Janice are REALLY good at blogging. I don't feel like I do as good of a job as them. I mean have you read their stuff? They are so clever and witty. I pale in comparison with their amazing writing ability.
Hopefully tomorrow I will spend some time and blog. I will have Laura (the great) help me. Anyway...til then.

Cha-Cha-Cha-Changes...

So after reading a lot of my friends blogs and seeing how cute and informative they are, I decided to change mine up a bit. I am still going to update my progress on weight loss and training for the Las Vegas Marathon, but I am going to add some life to it. I want to blog about cool things that happen and fun stuff that I do. I want to make it interesting so people will read it...I don't think people read it anyway. Oh well, I just want to have fun writing it. and be creative.

by the way "PO" stands for peace out.

Hey There

I know it has been a while since I have updated, so here is a quick one. I have been back to my normal exercise routine for almost a month (this is my 4th week)!! I have been doing really good and have found that I LOVE the eliptical machine. I was so afraid of it, but Amanda stood with me and got me on there and I love it. I really sweat when I am on it and I feel like I get a way better cardio workout on there than the treadmil. It has been awesome. I am going to put myself through a huge test next month when I go to Oregon. It will be a test on my will power to keep up my exercising and eating right. Laura has been really encouraging and supportive with me and has promised to not tempt me or let me talk her into eating crappy food. I am excited to see how I do and I really feel confident that I am able to do this. Well I will keep you updated and let you all know how things go. Have a wonderful day and remember that in the end what you do with your life is most important, make sure that you are happy, and if your not do something about it and make yourself happy! Later Bren
